Blessed Coast x Bobby Hustle, Legal Weed: Seattle fam Blessed Coast and Bobby Hustle are back at it, this time teaming up for a mix of strictly high grade dubplates pulled from the Blessed Coast vaults. 100% ganja specials to be exact, likely as testament and celebration to the fact that much of the Northwest is fully clouded in weed smoke nowadays — something this crew isn’t mad at at all. Bobby does his thing and puts his stamp on the mix, contributing some freestyles and hosting duties, while Blessed Coast peels off sheets of dubs from a stack of big artists, all showing love for the (legal) weed.

“When it comes to knowing what mashes a dance, few production outfits can match South Rakkas Crew.”—Pitchfork
“South Rakkas Crew make some of the most electrifying dance music on the planet.”—The Guardian
Diplo and ‘N Sync? Deerhoof and Elephant Man? Tricky and Michael Jackson? M.I.A and Thom Yorke? Just one name links up this diverse, groundbreaking posse: forget Kevin Bacon—when it comes to six degrees of the most cutting-edge music production out there, there’s only South Rakkas Crew.
Rugged dancehall, shameless pop, hipster electro bangers, rude dubstep—fuck it, South Rakkas does it all. A duo comprised of Dennis “D-Rakkas” Shaw and Alex Greggs, South Rakkas took an unusual path to become the dons of today’s digital funk. South Rakkas first gained fame for their blazing dancehall riddims (“Clappas,” “Red Alert,” “Bionic Ras,” “Chinkuzi” anyone?), which brought production work for stars like Mr. Vegas, Elephant Man. But it’s not for nothing that XLR8R recently praised South Rakkas for their “boundary-pushing” powers; indeed, these futuristic rhythm killers can’t be held down to any one sound or style. SRC can flex from Beenie Man and Bounty Killer one moment, T-Pain the next, and then on to the likes of M.I.A., Lily Allen, Beck, Duran Duran, Justin Timberlake, The Bug, Warrior Queen, Britney Spears, and Shakira—all of whom have been touched by South Rakkas’ edgy studio savvy. Those skills came about when Shaw and Greggs met up working at the same recording studio. Both had roots in the local hip-hop/reggae scene: Greggs created beats for local rap groups and, erm, Barenaked Ladies, while Shaw spent his youth as charismatic, party-starting DJ (“Rakkas” is in fact a local West Indian slang term for “rockers” reggae music that Shaw used to put on his DJ flyers to indicate his parties’ music policy). The concept for SRC first hatched, though, when Shaw and Greggs moved to Orlando, Florida to become a crucial part of ‘N Sync’s production team. There, the pair decided South Rakkas Crew, would combine both their strengths. The plan was simple: Greggs would hold down the pop/dance production side in Florida (his work with the archetypal boy band on smash albums like Pop would catapult him into the pantheon of platinum-plated star producer/mixer/remixers); Shaw, meanwhile, would travel to ruffneck Kingston, Jamaica, where an introduction from his brother-in-law Mr. Vegas gave him access to dancehall’s top talent. Rakkas’ first riddim, “Clappas,” quickly proved a major island smash, paving the way for many more; Jamaican and non-Jamaican audiences alike also appreciated SRC’s talent for fusing hook-laden song structure with sound-system destroying beats.
This unique combo of hit-making production and arrangement with hard-hitting dancehall sonics set the stage for SRC’s inevitable global takeover. While South Rakkas keeps a foot in the pop game—Greggs was working with Michael Jackson on new material before the King of Pop died, and recently remixed the likes of Beyoncé, Kelis and LMFAO—they’ve also been acclaimed by the underground and critics alike. When beat king Diplo put out South Rakkas’ Mad Again and The Mix Up eps on his Mad Decent label, the blogosphere proved unanimous in its praise: Prefix raved about Mix Up’s “production perfection,” while Thom Yorke recently dropped the Boy 8-Bit mix of “Mad Again” while guest DJing on Gilles Peterson’s BBC radio show. Trip-hop titan Tricky also recently chose SRC to remix his entire West Knowle Boy album, garnering rapturous press. According to The Independent, SRC “transformed it into a high-voltage electro and sublime space-disco monster. In fact, Knowle West Boy is barely there, but something fantastic has appeared in its place”; as well, the BBC called it “a collision of exotic and intoxicating rhythms that dance around truly body-rocking beats, hammered and glued into forms that enthrall and excite… Tricky Meets South Rakkas Crew is an electrifying listen, invigorating the parts Tricky can’t usually reach.”
SRC remains as prolific as ever. In 2010, Shaw and Greggs dropped a brand new, sixteen-track South Rakkas album, The Stimulus Package, as a free download, again via Mad Decent. Stimulus proved a classically iconoclastic SRC move: it featured, of course, expected cameos from dancehall mega-celebs like Capleton, Serocee and Mr. Agony, but mixed with surprises like vocals from Satomi Matsuzaki of indie-noise gurus Deerhoof and Mylo’s “Drop The Pressure” transformed into a dubplate riddim! Critics again united in unanimous admiration: The Fader said “South Rakkas Crew wants to start 2010 with energy. The Stimulus Package brims with their brand of rugged ragga that is laced with songs that could be heard at an all-night dance party at some club we’ve never been to in Madrid”; notable blog True Genius Requires Insanity stated “On The Stimulus Package, the South Rakkas Crew don’t just throw down the gauntlet in dancehall, but kick open doors in dubstep and electro…
South Rakkas Crew do everything on this album short of painting a sign that they are THE experimental force in dancehall music… A superb body of work by superb and veteran producers and remixers.”
The Stimulus Package marked only the beginning of SRC’s plan for world domination in 2010. D-Rakkas unveiled South Rakkas live experience, touring for the better part the year following a string of massively successful Australian festival tour dates in 2009; as well, M.I.A personally selected South Rakkas to open her N.E.E.T. label showcase.
After almost a year’s hiatus South Rakkas reemerges, in classic SRC form, only better, stronger, faster. Mad Decent drops a celestial bomb at the end of summer’s 2011 with the release of their most anticipated project to date, Gangsta Revival. Shaw steps out on this one, producing 7 of the EP’s 8 songs; carrying South Rakkas into a new realm with his distinctive approach to Dubstep, Moombahton and of course their classic style Electro-Dancehall burners. It’s all in a day’s work for South Rakkas: for the most crucial, next-level sounds out there, there is no substitute.
Were kicking of 2012 nice with a small California tour with Dway & Bobby Hustle from Dynasty Records. Check the lineup and come vibes with us when were in your city!!

This trio of genre-bender pride has made a name for itself on the Bay Area scene by successfully mixing spiritualism and hip-hop. Oakland’s MC Zion and DJ/producer Amp Live blend hip-hop and trip-hop beats with lyrics focused on a message of unity, hope, and spiritual awareness. After a couple of indie hits, the trio slowly made inroads while opening for rap royalty like De La Soul, Rakim, and Run-D.M.C. Their debut album, Mind Over Matter, was released in May of 2000 and features collaborations with fellow Bay Area rappers Rasco, Planet Asia, and the Grouch. Although Zion I operates out of Berkeley, the group was originally formed in Atlanta, making their music difficult to classify as strictly West Coast hip-hop. Their musical style makes them even harder to define. With a style that borrows from hip-hop, trance, drum’n'bass, and reggae, Zion I’s style is equally mystical and mystifying.

The Babylon Nightmare West Coast 2011 Tour brings together some of the most exciting talent to bubble up in the Dancehall world in years. Jahdan Blakkamoore is an international superstar on the verge of breaking out. Winner of I-Tunes’ Reggae Album of the Year award in 2008 & 2009, Blakkamoore steps out in 2011 with his brand new Lustre Kings produced album “Babylon Nightmare.” Whether highlighting Blakkamoore’s unique blend of Dancehall & Dubstep, as witnessed on his collaboration with Diplo on the huge “Major Lazer” release, or his seamless flow that can rival anyone in the Hip-Hop world, as heard in his previous works with Dj Premier & Dj Theory—”Babylon Nightmare” makes clear that Blakkamoore’s skills put him on another level, while his focus on issues such as inner-city poverty and justice lend a voice to the masses.
Jah Sun has been one of the hardest working men in the business over the last decade, collaborating on projects with artists from Alborosie to Gentleman and having appeared on countless major tours and festivals across the US. Though a staple on the West Coast, 2011 sees Jah Sun’s scope widen with planned international tours and festival appearances, where he looks to take his signature Cali-Roots style to the world.

MURS:
He is the only rapper with his own music festival. Each album he releases sells more than its predecessor. He toured the world without having a major record deal. So, there’s a reason why independent rap stalwart Murs decided to name his major label debut album Murs For President. Murs wants to be rap’s leader and spokesperson, the artist who helps give rap a credible face to fans, the media and critics. After all, the Los Angeles rapper is articulate and well read. He doesn’t use drugs and his platform consists of peace, love, unity and having fun. “Let me speak for hip-hop. I’m the one guy who is qualified to represent us to the masses — which are obviously tired of us because hip-hop often can’t sell records. It can only sell ringtones. It’s become a mockery of itself. It’s become club music. For us to lead back into the marketplace and to be a respected art form, I feel that I’m the most qualified person. It’s time for hip-hop to have a change.” From front to back, the eclectic, genre-bending, politically charged, musically adventurous Murs For President illustrates a change of direction for rap. The vibrant, optimistic “Can It Be” marks Murs’ return to music, and his dedication to make a change for the better with his words and through his influence on others. The bouncy, horn-propelled “Looking Fly” finds Murs paying homage to his forward-thinking fashion sense, while “Science” breaks down blacks’ history in the United States and how it is tied to hip-hop’s evolution. As he has done on his earlier albums — which include such acclaimed releases as Murray’s Revenge and Murs 3:16 The 9th Edition — Murs examines his own love life on several Murs For President cuts. The angst-filled “Part Of Me” documents the immediate, often turbulent time when a relationship dissolves, while the soulful “Breakin’ Up” details the mixed feelings people have once they have some distance from what had been a long-term relationship. For Murs, it is important to make credible relationship songs because so few exist in rap. “For young black males, being in love has such a negative connotation,” he explains. “Usually, your mother has been screwed over by some guy. The first time you get hurt by a girl, you use that as your reason to mistreat women for the next 20, 30 years of your life. I’m trying to hold up the mirror to myself.” Indeed, part of Murs’ background is the reality that he was raised in the gang-infested streets of Los Angeles. Thus, he’s a product of and fan of gangster rap. Murs pays homage to his city’s love for heavy funk on “Comfortable,” which features hardcore rap crooner Kokane and documents Murs cruising throughout Southern California’s streets in his ’96 Cadillac. Then, on the heavy “You Think You Know Me,” Murs raps from the perspective of a Crip, a Blood and a Cholo, showing that gangbangers often have more to their lives than their street affiliations. “I know a lot of great men who, at first glance, you might be scared to death of, or you might not want to give a job to,” he says. “But, they’re trustworthy. They’re loyal to a fault. If you show them a little bit of love and trust and let their family grow, then they’re going to be loyal.” Being that Murs had the time and resources to record an album on a major label, he wanted Murs For President to explore all aspects of his personality. Thus, he worked with a variety of artists and producers, from Snoop Dogg to punk band Whole Wheat Bread to will.i.am to DJ Premier and DJ Quik. “This one is for all the marbles,” Murs reveals. “If this don’t go, it don’t go. This is it for me. I’m almost 30. I’ve been doing this forever and if I don’t know how to do it by now and I can’t make a platinum record, I’ve failed. If I can’t get a Grammy, sell a million records and initiate some type of change in the culture and the music that I love, then it’s time for me to step aside.” Murs is so passionate about his music and his place in the rap pantheon because he’s one of rap’s best independent success stories. As a member of the Living Legends, Murs learned the art of independent self-promotion by selling cassette tapes of his music out of his car and touring with Living Legends in Europe and Japan. Given his underground status, Murs also embraced the power of the Internet long before most artists realized the power of the burgeoning medium. “When rappers were screaming don’t download, I was screaming, ‘Do it,’ because that was the only reason people would know my music in Texas and I could go do a show there and that would get me paid,” Murs explains. “I needed them to go to the show so they could buy the T-shirt and get on my mailing list so I could build something. There’s not many rappers who have built their fanbase like that.” Through the Internet, touring and his flurry of independent releases with Living Legends, with producer extraordinaire 9th Wonder, as one-half of Felt (with Atmosphere’s Slug) and as a solo artist, Murs has become one of rap’s best success stories. His Paid Dues makes him the only rapper to own his own music festival. But for Murs, the success of Murs For President will dictate his legacy. “My whole life, I’ve been trying to be Ice Cube,” Murs says. “The little stuff that I’ve got that people trip off of, I’m not even tripping off of because Shaquille O’Neal has a platinum plaque and I don’t — and I call myself a rapper. That hurts my feelings when I wake up in the morning. That’s what I’m here to get. I’m making a decision to leave Planet Underground Hip-Hop. I’m jumping off right now. Whoever wants to come with me, come with me.” And be sure to vote Murs For President.

Gentleman:
2010. The year of the tiger. Coincidentally, this is also the Chinese sign of the zodiac under which Gentleman was born. Tigers are known to be sensitive, courageous and born leaders – in fact, these are the very qualities that define Germany’s most popular reggae musician. At barely 35, Gentleman has made himself a name as a tireless ambassador of reggae. Indeed, with masterly albums like “Journey To Jah“ and “Confidence”, he has given this genre a new, distinctive profile and the kind of contemporary relevence which reggae hasn’t had hereabouts since the days of Bob Marley. Moreover, Gentleman has long since become an interationally renowned star. He is a recognised constant in several European countries as well as South America, Africa and even the US. Wherever he goes, people appreciate the stage artist’s charisma as much as his fabulous reggae hymns, dedicated to Consciousness, Righteousness and Tolerance.
Jah Sun:
From the heart of Humboldt County, where the redwoods meet the Pacific, Jah Sun emerges as an artist dedicated to global and social healing. Fusing the sounds of hip-hop, reggae and world music with conscious and uplifting lyrics, Jah Sun hopes to awaken the human spirit and inspire others to live to their ultimate potential.
Jah Sun’s debut album, “Height of Light” (More Love Productions & Moodswing Records, 2006), features some of reggae’s top recording artists such as Luciano, Junior Reid, Lutan Fyah and Grammy Award winner, Yami Bolo. Jah Sun brings his message of love and unity with a variety of vocal styles. From fierce hip-hop explosions like “Nuff a Dem” and melodic ballads paying respect to generations of family in “Circles and Cycles”, to rootsy anthems like ‘More Love’ and sensual, dancehall licks in ‘Fyah Dance’ Jah Sun brings something for everyone. Regardless of style, the common theme throughout all of his music maintains the messages of positivity, love and respect, and kindness to all. In the words of Chuck Foster in The Beat Magazine, “Jah Sun shines brightly on the “Height of Light”…the message remains positive and focused throughout…and offers some solution to the social problems addressed.” (Vol. 26, 2007)
Jah Sun has gained great recognition recently, not just within the reggae industry but in more mainstream markets as well. After being nominated for LA Music Awards’ “Hip-Hop Single of the Year for 2006”, Jah Sun’s song ‘Fyah Dance’ was also featured on the fall 2006 season premiere of MTV’s hit show, “Laguna Beach”. Another track off “The Height of Light”, ‘Nuff a Dem’ was included in FUEL TV’s “2007 Vans Downtown Showdown”. The song that reached the most international recognition “No Bonez No Blood” is played on radio stations world wide and the video plays regularly on Jamaica’s Hype TV.
Jah Sun’s latest release “Stronger” reaches new levels of musical maturity and features artists such as KRS-ONE, Norris Man, Chezidek, Messenjah Selah and more. In 2007 Jah Sun performed at the Raggamuffins Festival in Santa Cruz, CA where he met and befriended Gentleman and the Far East Band, Germany’s top reggae artists. Then in 2009 Jah Sun was asked to sit in with Gentleman and the Far East Band in front of 14,000 people at California’s premier reggae festival, Reggae Rising. Soon to follow was the EP “Gravity” from Jah Sun and The Far East Band.
Jah Sun’s latest endeavor is the partnership with Stevie Culture, a project called Jah Culture. They have toured together for 8 months, playing many of the west coasts biggest festivals as well as a tour to Hawaii. Their first CD 2012 is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2010.
Jah Sun is also halfway through his third album which is self titled “Jah Sun”. This CD is different from the first two and is anticipated to be the best work of his career. Jah Sun has produced, written and arranged most of the music for this album with additional production from Stevie Culture.
Jah Sun is also a founding member of the 7 piece crew called Lion Camp. Lion Camp is a musical family that includes Jah Sun, Ishi Dube, Soul Medic, Rocker T, Jah Works the Revolutionary, Winstrong and Stevie Culture. Lion Camp released their first single in 2009 “King of Kings” and has been an instant favorite to all who have witnessed the unveiling of this project.
One thing that is for sure about Jah Sun, is that since he appeared on the scene in 2006 he has been one of the fastest rising artist from Northern California. He has sold thousands of CD’s, played the west coast’s major festivals from Reggae Rising, Earthdance, Monterey Bay, Seattle Hempfest and Northwest World Reggae Festival and continues to gain new fans every step of the way. His music appeals to people from all walks of life and in the words of Bob Doran of the North Coast Journal “…an irie time is guaranteed for all”.
